Obesity is an increasing problem in industrialized countries. Dramatically increasing mortality and morbidity from hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases have been observed in connection with obesity in recent years.

Obesity is a complex multifactorial disease that depends on genetic factors and environmental influences. The strong genetic influence could be clearly demonstrated by the description of monogenic forms (e.g. LEP, LEPR, PCSK1, POMC or MC4R). In rare cases, mutations in other genes have also been described.
